There are plenty of accessories that you can buy that can be useful with cross stitching. Needle minders, pattern keeper software, lights, magnifiers, and hoops/Qsnaps are all great, but you can easily stitch in hand without all the extras. These accessories can add up quickly and end up being quite costly. Cross stitch does not have to be an expensive hobby! All you really need is:

 The will to learn

 Aida cloth

 Tapestry needles

 6 stranded floss

 Sharp scissors
